During the 2001, Dallas/Fort Worth district,
Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) church’s Annual Conference held at
the Holiday Inn in Desoto, Texas, Brother George W. Garrett honored his
wife, Lugene Smith Garrett, by initiating a $2,000.00 Annual
Scholarship to Texas College. Brother Garrett stated that
scholarships are often named in memory of the deceased loved ones. But
he wanted to honor his wife of 46 years, and to express his love for
her, so she may experience the joy of having a scholarship named in her
honor. The scholarship is channeled through Kirkwood Temple CME church
where other Kirkwood members and friends are encouraged to enhance the
scholarship amount, in future years, by adding to the $2,000 minimum
amount. Texas
College is a Historically Black liberal arts institution, supported
by Christian Methodist Episcopal churches, that provides educational
opportunities primarily to African American youth. It is located at 2404
North Grand Avenue in Tyler, Texas. Dr. Jerry L. Christian Sr., Senior
Pastor of Kirkwood Temple CME church and Bishop Marshall Gilmore, Bishop
of the Eighth Episcopal District presented the scholarship to Dr. Billy
C. Hawkins, 20th President of Texas College during the Annual Conference
final evening service, the Women’s Missionary March, where Dr. Hawkins
was keynote speaker. The “Lugene Garrett
Scholarship” will be
given annually to Texas College to be awarded to an entering freshman
selected by the college. The only stipulations requested by Brother
Garrett is that the recipient be a high school graduating senior,
accepted by Texas College as a first time, full time, freshman. Even though originally from Jefferson, Texas neither Brother Garrett nor Sister Garrett attended Texas College. Bother Garrett received a BS degree from Southwest Texas State and a MBA degree from Texas A & M. – Commerce. Sister Garrett attended Sacramento College and the University of California at Davis in California. However, both stated that they realize the significance of Historically Black Colleges, as a means of acquiring a higher education, to our youth. Brother Garrett is Vice-chairperson of the Trustee Board and Sister Garrett is president of the Pastor’s Aid Committee at Kirkwood Temple CME church, 1440 Sunny Glen, Dallas Texas 75232. As members of Kirkwood Temple, for the past twenty five years, they strongly and actively support Texas College in a variety of ways. The Garretts stated that the scholarship is just one more way to show that they are advocates for Historically Black Colleges, especially Texas College. The money is a small amount but it might help to “Jump Start” the college career of some young person who other wise may not have been able to attend college. Brother Garrett said that with God’s help the “Lugene Garrett” scholarship would be assured during his lifetime and hopefully be continued by Kirkwood Temple CME as long as Kirkwood and Texas College existed. |
