Parker Chapel CME Church

120 Years and still Growing!!!

And it does not yet appear what the Lord shall make of us!!

Parker Chapel Church was Organized in 1881 by Reverend Perry Parker, a white minister. This church was named for Reverend Parker who also gave the plot of land upon which a small log church was built.

Some of the charter members were: Ben Hale, Ned and Hattie Blakemore, Phillip and Leslie Johnson, Felix and Angeline Lipscomb, Julie Lipscomb, Pete and Nerva Shane.

As the membership grew, a larger building was needed. Additional land adjoining the first plot was bought from Mr. Cage Fly. A larger box church was built replacing the log church. Later years this box church was remodeled and made into a frame building was an approximate seating capacity of 100.

After several years, that building became dilapidated and another frame building was erected. That building was used for a period of years in alternating services for the Methodist and Baptist congregations.

By 1934 this building had become badly in need of repair from many years of service. The membership at that time decided to build a new church, which would be built of brick. So, in 1935 under the administration of Reverend H. Alley, the present brick structure was built. This building was built by one of the former members, Mr. John Sharp.

An unfortunate incident Occurred during the construction of the present church building. When the frame-work and top were completed during the construction process, a Storm came along and blew the entire frame-work down. This caused much extra work for the contractor who had to undo all that had been done up to that point and start all over again.

During the many years that passed from the beginning of the first frame church building to 1935, many more early pioneers of Parker Chapel, in addition to the chartered members, had passed away after serving this church well for many years. Among them were: Morris and Nora Johnson, Emma Scott, Lee and Emma Williams, Jim and Laura Johnson, Bob and Harriet Johnson, Dennis Seat, John and Mary Gaston, John and Jane Lee, Harriet Moore, and Robert and Bell Dickson.

Among those earlier members of this church who were living and active at the time the present building was erected were: Willie Scott, Will and Ida Seets, Minnie Powell, Frank and Betty Robinson, Ida Sharp, Bertha Holland, Arthur Sharp, Lillie Lewis, Fannie Scott, Jim and Pauline Lipscomb, Andrew Lee Everett (Buck) Lee, Bessie Scott Tyler, John Kendall, Herbert N. Hunt, Charles Williams, Otha.Lewis, Morine Williams Lewis, Jessie Scott Enlow, Willie and Lula Williams, Johnie Lipscomb.

Throughout the 120 years of Parker Chapel's existence, its membership has come from several families, to a name a few are: The Johnson, Blakemore, Scott, Seets, Powell, Robinson, Williams, Green, Tyler, Donald, Lee, Armour, Kendall, Hunt, Shane, Whitehorn, Lipscomb, Littleton, Mydget, Gaston, Dickson, Elem, McCurry, Baraham, and Spinks families.

The present building was first renovated in the late 1940's under the pastoral leadership of the Reverend J. Jaggers. This building was built with an open porch in front. Two doors spaced a short distance apart opened into the main sanctuary from the porch.

The membership decided along with the pastor to have the porch enclosed with brick into a vestibule, and have a concrete walk built from the entrance to the public road approximately 50 feet away. Though electricity had been installed a few years prior to that time, no further renovations or improvements were been made until 1962 when renovations were made on the interior of the building.

These renovations and improvements included replacing the original overhead ceiling of celotex with wooden beaded ceiling beautifully varnished. Wooden strips were removed from the walls and joints were taped, followed a complete paint job. Floor furnaces were installed and gas became the primary source of fuel for the first time. These improvements were made during the administration of Reverend R.T. Fouse.

Another major renovation took place during the 1969 -1970 Conference year under the leadership of Reverend L. Stamps, pastor at that time. For a few years prior to Reverend Stamps' appointment, the membership had started a building fund for improvement on the building but had not responded too well. Reverend Stamps provided the caliber of leadership needed to get the job done. The members cooperated beautifully and the renovation was completed in less than one year. This renovation program included the following improvements: enlarging the choir stand and pulpit area; replacing the old front vestibule with a larger lobby; installed inside rest rooms for the first time; paneled the choir stand, lobby and partially paneled the walls of the main sanctuary; carpeted the floors; replaced old windows with stained glass windows with the names of families who paid for a window etched on it; purchased new pews; new pulpit and new pulpit rail.

Central heat and air units were installed in 1977 when Reverend Robert People served Pastor. Under the leadership of Reverend A. L. Campbell additional improvements have been accomplished. They include replacement of the first steeple on the roof with one that gives the building a very beautiful appearance especially at night. The light on the inside of this steeple is controlled by a time clock and it comes on at night and turns off automatically at daybreak. A cold water fountain was also added and a new Communion Table was purchased to replace the old one.

During the administration of our current Pastor Billy J. Liggons a new roof was placed on the church during the 1999-2000 Conference year. Pastor Liggons also designed the first World Wide Web Page for Parker Chapel Church; we are hosted at cme-church.org. The plans for the 2000-2001 Conference year includes vinyl siding on the church's wooden trim, and replacing the church steeple.

Parker Chapel Church building is located one-fourth mile north of Gibson, Tennessee, on the Trenton and Gibson highway. It is small brick structure with a seating-capacity of approximately 100.

The Heritage of these persons lives on at Parker Chapel CME Church Today!!!!
